Punjab Kings maintained their position at the summit of the IPL 2026 table, though a four-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad served as a reminder of the fine margins in T20 cricket. On a tricky surface with variable bounce, PBKS posted 163, a score that felt competitive but not secure. Gujarat chased it down with a ball to spare, relying on composure rather than aggression.
Suryansh Shedge emerged as the standout performer for Punjab, crafting a vital 57 off 29 balls, featuring three fours and five sixes. His innings was marked by astute reading of the pitch—he resisted early risks and accelerated only after settling in. “I wouldn’t say I was waiting, I was preparing,” Shedge said. “Time on the sidelines helped me prepare physically and mentally. Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer always told me to grab the opportunity when it comes.”
He emphasised patience on the slow, double-paced wicket: “Targeting 240 or 250 was never realistic. I just wanted to spend time at the crease, and that made things easier. Perhaps we could have scored 20–25 more runs, but 163 was a fighting total. There are many positives to take.”
With the ball, Arshdeep Singh was economical (2/24 in four overs), while Vijaykumar Vyshak provided key wickets, including Jos Buttler and Sai Sudharsan. Shedge revealed tactical input from the bowling coach just before the powerplay, which helped Vyshak adjust his length effectively.
Punjab Kings remain on 13 points from nine games, leading the standings. Their next challenge is an away fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
