In a quarterfinal match of the U17 Women’s Asian Cup held on Monday, Australia secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Vietnam to become the first side to book a spot in the semifinals.
Australia advanced from Group B as the second-placed team with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss. Vietnam also finished second in Group A behind hosts China, with the same record.
The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Australia launched a long ball forward. After a shot was blocked, Kara Beres seized the rebound and calmly slotted home from close range to open the scoring.
Just three minutes later, another long pass exposed Vietnam’s defense, and Leila Hussein produced a brilliant lob from a tight angle to double Australia’s lead.
The second half saw no further goals, as Australia cruised to a 2-0 win. With this victory, they not only advanced to the semifinals but also secured a spot in the U17 Women’s World Cup.
In the semifinals, Australia will face Japan, the tournament’s runner-up from the previous edition, who defeated South Korea 1-0 earlier to clinch their own World Cup berth.
Hosts China will take on India in the final quarterfinal at 19:30 local time, aiming to join the semifinal lineup.
