The European Union has confirmed a major crackdown on cash usage, introducing a unified limit for all member states. Starting in 2027, cash payments exceeding €10,000 will be prohibited across the bloc.

This measure is designed to combat tax evasion, money laundering, and promote a more digital and transparent economy. However, in Spain, where the current cash payment limit is already set at just €1,000, the new rule will have minimal impact.

The regulation, outlined in EU Regulation 2024/1624, standardises cash payment rules for the first time across the entire European Union. Previously, each country enforced its own limits—some, like Spain, already had strict restrictions, while others allowed virtually unmonitored cash transactions.

Under the new law, any purchase exceeding €10,000 must be conducted through methods that allow identification of both the payer and the recipient. This includes bank transfers, card payments, cheques, or digital payment platforms.

Businesses in sectors such as vehicle sales, jewellery, luxury goods, and real estate—where large cash transactions remain common—will feel the most impact. Brussels believes that limiting physical cash will make it easier to trace suspicious financial movements and reduce the underground economy, a persistent societal issue.

The regulation also requires enhanced identity checks for certain financial operations. Cash is still widely used to conceal income or move money from illicit activities, and these new rules aim to stop that at the source.
