Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday reshaped the Premier League relegation picture, securing survival for Nottingham Forest and Leeds United. The result means either West Ham or 17th-placed Tottenham Hotspur will join already-relegated Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship next season.
Forest, sitting 15th, drew 1-1 with Newcastle United earlier in the day, moving them seven points clear of the drop zone with two matches remaining. Leeds, meanwhile, were assured of safety without even playing this weekend. Daniel Farke’s side, currently 16th, also have a seven-point cushion heading into Monday’s clash against Spurs.
West Ham thought they had snatched a stoppage-time equalizer through Callum Wilson, but a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review by Darren England intervened. An on-field review was recommended to referee Chris Kavanagh, who then ruled the goal out due to a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya by West Ham’s Pablo.
A draw would have left Forest and Leeds mathematically vulnerable, but given the goal-difference margins—Forest on -2, Leeds on -5, and West Ham entering the game on -19—a dramatic swing would have been required to change the outcome.
Forest head coach Vitor Pereira, whose side were eliminated from the Europa League at the semi-final stage after a 4-0 second-leg loss to Aston Villa on Thursday, admitted he avoided watching West Ham’s game. “This is a conversation we had before the game—we cannot control other results,” Pereira said. “I do not want to watch the game, because I suffer with my team; I cannot suffer with other teams. I believe we can win more points; we can get more points. It is eight games unbeaten, and that is not easy in the Premier League.”
Forest face Manchester United and Bournemouth in their remaining fixtures. Leeds, promoted as Championship winners last season, have joined Sunderland in avoiding immediate relegation back to the second tier. In the past two seasons, all three promoted sides had been sent straight back down.
After their match against Spurs, Leeds will take on Brighton & Hove Albion and then West Ham in what could be a decisive final-day encounter. West Ham visit Newcastle next Sunday, while Tottenham travel to Chelsea on May 19 before hosting Everton on the final day.
